About the Pastor

Don's mugPastor Don Schluter was born and raised on a small dairy farm in Dongola, Illinois.  He was blessed by God to have had the influence of three generations of family in his life as he grew up.  "My great grandmother, Maggie George; my grandparents, Harold and Beulah Schluter; and my parents, Ray and Julia Schluter; taught me to work hard, be self-disciplined, and to be honest in every situation.  My family laid the strong foundation in life that I now stand upon," said Pastor Don.

Don married Sharon Bedwell on June 28,1980.  They have four sons: Derek, Scott, Joshua, and Dustin.  Don and Sharon both attended SIU, with Sharon completing two years of secretarial studies in 1979, and Don  graduated with a Bachelor in Science degree in Education in 1983.  Sharon has worked for many years as a secretary, and Don taught as a school teacher for 18 years.

Don and Sharon came to know Jesus as their personal Savior in June 1985 .  Since then, they have served as nursery coordinators, Christian school teachers, youth pastors, praise leaders, and Don as an elder in the local church.

In December 2002, the Schluters answered God's call to plant a new church in Marion.  In an early morning prayer time, the Lord spoke to their hearts to plant a new work and to call it New Horizons, because it would be a new beginning for many.  The Lord has miraculously provided for them through all the trials and attacks, and we are more in love with Jesus than ever.

  Mission Statement

Our Mission, as the Body of Christ, is to reach the world for Jesus. We want to Raise up disciples, Release them into God's purposes, so they can Reach the world with the Gospel of Christ.

  Vision Statement

Our desire is to see local churches established, built upon prophetic biblical principles, according to God’s purposes, by His presence. We want to see a body of people come together who are willing to share life through relationships and worship; with the common goal of helping each other fulfill personal and corporate destinies in God. We want to build a church, Apostolic in nature, that is committed to raising up disciples to be sent out to fulfill the Great Commission all over the world. We want to see local churches raised up in every community with this same vision and purpose.

  Foundational Statement

We believe that except the Lord build His church, it is built in vain. Therefore, total dependency must be shown upon the Holy Spirit to give leadership and wisdom on how to build effectively. Jesus is the Head of His church. We believe that a true foundation, which is Jesus Christ, must be built through the Apostolic and Prophetic grace gifts, relationship with the Lord, and then each other must be primary in our lives.

His presence is most important in all we do individually and corporately. We believe that the Church’s primary purpose is to minister to the Lord. Outreach must always be secondary to Upreach. We believe that God appointed Elders are to have rule and oversight in His church. They are to be men who are mature in the character of Christ, who are laying their lives down for the church.
